You can’t spell “MaRkup” without the “R”

They’d have to pay me to own a red one.

Some dealers are still marking them up but it looks like it is possible to find one selling at MSRP now. If not, used ones with about 5k miles are selling for at it slightly below the new MSRP. Though I shudder to think how badly the break-in instructions were ignored on a used Type R

Wonder if it’s going to be like the FoRS, huge markup, lots of inventory, and people getting rid of them after a few thousand miles.

I wouldn’t buy a used one because I’m sure people completely disregarded the break-in procedure.

I actually like the Si better from a livability standpoint.

I suspect the Type R will fare better. Inventory doesn’t seem to bad. I haven’t driven either but most of the reviews I’ve read seem say the Civic is the better driver’s car. The Honda also supposedly rides way less harshly on the street. I’ve been in enough Focuses (Focii?) to know that RS also just isn’t that practical - it’s a poorly packaged vehicle and the Golf R, STi and Type R for most people will be more useful for buyers that want a car to daily and maybe track once in a while. Add in the major reliability concerns and I just can’t see the RS values holding up as well as well. The only three things that could hurt the resale of the Civic are the looks, if the new turbo motor turns out to not be typical Honda reliable, or if they produce too many. I suspect it will hold value similarly to the STi. I think the used Type R’s on the market now are probably a combination of people who couldn’t get used to the looks and younger buyers who realized they couldn’t afford the payments than people who just didn’t like the car or were scared it was going to blow up as seemed to be the case with the RS.

So, bets on when the first CPO CTR will show up at a dealer?

Another random musing on the markups... everyone knew the RS production run would be short because the car didn’t come out until something like 5 years into its generation’s life. So consumers knew they had to act quick and dealers knew it too. The Type R is also limited quantity, but it will be around for more model years so there doesn’t have to be a big rush. The markups were more of a tax on the JDM fanboys who have been waiting years for Type R in the USA. At some point that market will be saturated and the car will move at or around MSRP. It seems like a great value at $35k if you can get over the looks though so I don’t expect it to ever get a discount from sticker.

Yeah, and I think it’s less overdone on the styling. But no hatchback right?

Right. There is the Sport hatch, which got a slightly detuned version of the same engine, but it doesn’t have the LSD or the improved suspension of the Si.

Yeah, I think the markups will fade away in another year or two. Honda has said they plan to produce this Type R until 2021.

Thanks. I typed it on mobile and went back and read it after I hit publish and thought this doesn’t make as much sense as it did in my head but close enough.

I got what you were trying to say. Civic Type-R is a better car that was released at the dawn of a model release and not the twilight like the FoRS. The reasons you listed for sale are also valid reasons. It seems like a lot of the FoRS’s that are for sale is because they either didn’t live up to the hype or just sucked at being a DD.
